In part I agree with your take that government's direct involvement in supporting media could be problematic.

But the possibilities of government direct support of newspapers are by no means the approach that makes the most sense. Rather, as the not-for-profit media sector continues to gain traction, the subsidy will be indirect. For example, not for profit newspapers presumably would not pay taxes, and could have other advantages--like a reduced mailing rate, similar to what has been available to libraries for decades.

The one thing that does need to be maintained, to keep the for-profit sector from somthering the nascent NFP media sector, is to maintain ownership rules, so unrelated corporations (eg GE-NBC) won't buy up the media companies as they become deals.

The NFP media sector will continue to gain traction, as I've predicted here about a year or so ago....
