I’m a little disappointed that the logs only go through the end of September, but that’s actually consistent with the White House’s previously released Voluntary Disclosure Policy, which imposes a 3-4 month delay. Was not explained is why the policy only applies to “records created after September 15, 2009,” even though the previous disclosure. ended August 31—creating a 15 day gap for the beginning of September, for which the White House has not released any records. The policy seems to suggest that the White House isn’t planning to release any more records prior to September 15, and will only “respond voluntarily to individual requests submitted to the Counsel’s Office that seek records during that time period, but only if the requests are reasonable, narrow, and specific (e.g., requests that list specific possible visitors).” That’s a little strange, and one might wonder why the first two weeks of September are being singled out for special treatment, but that’s not really relevant to my main point here.

The point is that we don’t have much more data to go on here, but even one meeting with Larry Summers, Director of the National Economic Council, indicates a far closer relationship with the administration then Commissioner Leary would have countenanced.

One final note: while the logs indicate “Genachowski swearing” on July 15 ( and only three visits after that), Genachowski was actually sworn in officially on June 29. But the more important point here is that he was essentially operating as a shadow FCC chairman since the very first day the administration, and certainly since his nomination on March 3. So my basic point is that his collaboration with the White House is unprecedented in its closeness—and that close relationship appears to be continuing, even judging from this additional two weeks worth of data released today.
