I think there is something else at play here, something that no one else has mentioned: the novelty factor. At first, Wikipedia was something many people wanted to be a part of, with the ability to add your own contributions, edit the contributions of others, and create totally new articles. All this came along side user pages, fancy titles (like admin & bureaucrat), and room for upward mobility in the Wikipedia hierarchy. But like all other things in this technological era where new technologies are born and die off at quantum-leap rates (myspace and now twitter come to mind), Wikipedia has lost its luster for many. If the die-hard Wikipedians stay at the healm of the ship, maybe this does indeed mean a better, more serious product in the end. We shall see... I'd like to add that on a personal note, Wikipedia was a great idea, and provided a platform for millions of speakers of minority languages that otherwise have no voice in the standard realm of news and information. With that alone in mind, the Wikipedia founders gifted something so precious to humanity without even realizing it.

The problem with Wikipedia is on the controversial topics. I was working on the article on global cooling when I was challenged by an admin who claimed that the edits I talked about were fringe. I went off looking for better sources to justify the inclusion of the edit or something similar. I found it, in an article written that spring by the admin who had asserted that nobody was covering the idea. I then looked into the admin's record and found years of attempts to eject him for bias and abusing his admin privileges. He always skated, having a significant stable of supporters who voted in his favor time and again.

I can use my time better and now am working to fill out other wikis instead in the time I reserve for putting data out on the Internet. I suspect that a number of other 'wikipedia alumni' are doing the same.

Wikipedia is a very useful tool in internet. It gives clear idea about a unknown word. There are more additional information regarding the word. The trend of making loss of Wikipedia need to be stop.
