The Free Press cuts to the chase - "Hey, our Progressive viewpoint is right, has always been, is morally superior, and thus free from any corrupting influence a 'public option' might appear to impose. We can stand above the fray."

I went to J school and got a degree. They taught us to "bust" corporations because, well, they're...corporations; they're responsible for mostly evil things. No wonder that Pew year-after-year shows how entrenched "progressive' thinking (and reporting, and editorializing, etc.) is in newsrooms.

If you look at circulation numbers, and Nielsen / Arbitron ratings, though, you see that "conservative" outlets, like Fox and the WSJ, thrive, while the many of the great "prgressive" dailies sink.

The Free Press wants protection from that. "How dare the masses want something other than our 'truths'! Congress, HELP! The masses cannot get 'truth' unless we get subsidies from the teat of Uncle Sam."

I appreciated one of the posts on FP's "SavetheNews" blog (they're always saving something or other, such a benevolent lot) that criticized Twitter users and journalists alike for being too harsh on Leonard Downie and Michael Schudson after they released their "Reconstruction of American Journalism" report last month, which similarly called for a state-funded and maintained Fourth Estate.

The FP post says something to the tune of "We need to move beyond these knee-jerk reactions to accept public policy as part of the future of journalism."

Yeah, funny thing about those knee-jerk reactions, they tend to save your life in dangerous situations :/
