I find use of the tie-in to the the German attack on Poland deeply offensive. Your disclaimer is irrelevant, as the graphic of the bombing of Warsaw is used so prominently.

It is wrong, Berin. The fact that you have relatives that were in concentration camps does not make your use of the Nazi tie-in any less wrong-it makes it more so.

Ah, yes, the old advertisers=spammers canard. I hate spam as much as anyone, but let's be clear what spam is: unsolicited advertising for which consumers get nothing in return and over which they have limited control (spam filters). Contrary to your comment ("No targeted spam please"), spam is generally completely UN-targeted—which is huge part of the reason we all find it so annoying.

In these senses, spam is the complete opposite of online advertising in general and "behaviorally targeted" or "personalized" advertising in particular. Online advertising in general supports free content and services provided by users and thus differs profoundly from spam or telemarketing (essentially "phone call spam"). Targeted advertising tries hard not to "spam" users by showing them ads for things they aren't likely to be interested in. This isn't just because online advertisers are better people; it's because ads users don't find interesting aren't just a waste of the advertiser's money, they actually tend to ruin all online advertising by encouraging "ad blindness."

It takes a zealot to know one. It has only taken a few bad Advertisers (i.e. spammers) to spoil it for everyone. Cleaning up your industry would be a good first step in an attempt to earn the consumers trust.

The Urban Dictionary defines "douche baggery" as:

The act in which someone is being a douche bag or has the characteristics or symptoms of a douche bag.

I'm certainly not saying that you're a douche bag, but the parallels are eerie.

This is an offensive analogy. You and PFF should immediately post an apology. Even in jest, it is inappropriate to compare privacy and consumer advocates with Nazis. As someone who lost many family members during the Holocaust, mourns for the many millions of Jews and non-Jews murdered, and recognizes the tremendous destruction the Hiltler regime did throughout Europe, especially to democracies, I find the column beyond tasteless.
