Hi Adam,
With regard to the wonderful swimming metaphor of online safety, i'm reminded of the Talmud's teaching that a parent must teach their child to read, to learn a trade and to swim. I always learned that the swimming was both literal and metaphorical; if a child isn't taught to swim, they could drown, but also is a form of independence that needs instruction.

And too bad you don't live in my neighborhood - we enjoy a steady stream of "drop by" playdates on the weekend because i'm too busy and disorganized to schedule playdates.

Yeah, the whole concept of a "play date" just kills me. Whenever my daughter sees a friend outside in our sleepy and completely safe neighborhood and asks that kid if they can come over and play, the kid's mom or dad typically pulls out a Blackberry and asks me if we should schedule a play date. I usually say, "Well, it looks like both kids are available right now, so I say let's get crazy and let 'em play!" To which I usually get blank stares as if I had violated some primal parenting directive to only let kids play in a structured, scheduled fashion. After all, if we just let kids play spontaneously, God only knows what a disaster that would be!

The whole world has gone nuts. I used to get on my bike and ride through parks and corn fields and be gone for hours at a time. And without a cell phone for mom to check in, I might add. Somehow I survived.

Heck Matt, my kid is absurdly pretty at 3 1/2 and she's already using her looks to manipulate outsiders. Maybe I need to get her some scars :)

On a serious note: Adam, sing it LOUD! Having grown up in real Alaska (not Los Anchorage) I am constantly amazed at the rubberized, sanitized childhood here in the lower 48.

What's worse, it's hard to break your kids out of the cycle individually. I've had many friends with 5-7 year olds who live in a quiet cul-de-sac, but the kids can't just wander over to "Timmy's house" without both parents agreeing on a play date.

That's just insane.

You let them play with tools and they get hurt? I hope you keep Mederma around to minimize their scars so they won't be social cripples as they get older. Because, as you know, only the pretty people get anwhere. </sarcasm>
