This reminds me of the suicides among teenagers that occurred after severe cyberbullying. While I agree that anonymous commentary is important for continued freedom of expression on the webs, how do you think we should address the extreme cases of cyberbullying and harassment?

It is true that people feel freer to express their opinions when they know that the enforcers of the prevailing orthodoxies won't be able to tar and feather them. The left is as puritanical about perceived "hate" as the right has ever been about sexual morality. In fact, I would submit that most "liberals" have not one iota of moral superiority or difference from social conservatives in their desire to impose rigid codes of conduct.

If we ever had a genuinely free and open debate on things like race, I think it would get "ugly" by liberal standards very quickly because people who no longer fear being tarred as a racist for saying how they really feel about the state of things. We are indeed a nation of cowards because we know that that is precisely what would happen if we had an honest, open debate on these social issues without fear of reprisal for anyone for expressing their honest opinion.

People have been quick to say that the internet, especially due to its pseudo-anonymity, has been responsible for the polarization of this country, but that's not true at all. The real reason is that we have entered an increasingly political, even totalitarian stage where everything is on the table, and the mavens of political correctness are as viciously censorious of even honest opinions as any puritan zealot. If anything, the Internet is a safety valve which is slowly delaying the inevitable point we will reach where we have to come to the conclusion that America is so divided that it has no future as one country anymore.

The news and politics business does better at this than the medical business does. You see all kinds of weird stuff in the comments on mainstream news sites, but nothing unconventional makes it onto a mainstream medical site--so alternative medicine and quack sites do well. If weird or hostile news and politics comments got filtered out, the posters would just spend more time on dedicated extreme sites.

Well written.

Anonymous comments reveal the heart of darkness both within the commentors themselves - but also with the object of their comments. At times, the only way by which the darkest sides of our society are exposed to light are by those with first hand knowledge but for whom retribution would be too severe if they come forward. Much of what we know about darkness of those with authority and in leadership comes from anonymous sources. With the demise of investigative journalism as the fourth branch of government, the role of the anonymous commentor will become even more vital for the survival of democracy.
