Very insightful article. Note it engages in actual thought about the complexities of the free market, where everyone pursuing rational self-interest in the short-term can lead to problematic results in the long-term.

Interesting look at this issue. One thing I'd question is where you say, "they have to make a certain amount of revenue per unit of output" I don't think that's true. They have to make a certain amount of revenue despite the number of units of output, plus a certain amount of revenue per unit of output. This fact makes the business even more difficult than as stated in the article.

Maybe it's not fair to excoriate the 10-years-ago them, but isn't it a little fair to do so now? Does anyone really believe that newspapers will exist in their current form in 10 or 15 or 20 years? I keep waiting for one newspaper in the country to try something drastic--shutting down all their paper infrastructure and moving online, for example.

True, no one could have predicted craiglist or YouTube or 538.com. But we can certainly see them now. If newspapers can't adapt now, when?

Organizations find it hard to change, and people find it hard to change organizations. It's usually much easier (and rewarding) for visionaries to find funding for new endeavors outside established organizations than within them, where they have to fight not just the competition, but the organization they're trying to help.
