As I’ve said before, Mr. Holder has been a vocal critic of Bush administration privacy-destroying policies like the NSA wiretapping program and the PATRIOT Act. That’s reason for hope, but given Mr. Holder’s record on this issue, that hope shouldn’t be a great one.

That hope shouldn't exist. Given that he was one of the power players in the Reno DoJ, and was behind the SWAT raid on the Gonzalez residence, his opposition to the Bush Administration's policies is more likely a matter of "the other side is doing it" than principle. Remember, many Republicans were beside themselves when the FBI was working on Carnivore in the mid to late 1990s, but were staunch defenders of Bush's surveillance programs. You can't really trust that these people have principles.
