&lt;p&gt;I suppose you&#039;re right, if you&#039;re thinking only in terms of efficiency.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But what if I don&#039;t want to cut all those checks and have my political leanings on the public record? How would I teach my children about the importance of voting if I myself routed around the system? How would I teach them about the value of hard work?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;What if I don&#039;t believe in political parties or political lobbies? What if I think the massive amounts of money involved in politics are at the root of Americans&#039; mistrust of government?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Sure, getting a million bucks in return for my voting rights would be great. But I wouldn&#039;t characterize it as a completely lopsided exchange.&lt;/p&gt;
