My take away from reading Mr. Robinson's post is that the free market is actually operating inefficiently. What we have here are two vendors who are expending significant resources (time, money, manpower) to sell the same product (music) with different packaging (DRM). This packaging does not add value to the consumer since the consumer could hear the same song whether or not it is packaged in DRM.

Additionally, the DRM packaging appears to destroy consumer value since DRM limits how the product can be used. In fact, given the right circumstances the product will self destruct or to be more accurate refuse to work.

Furthermore, this article, as well as others, implies that DRM is evolving into a method of locking the consumer into a proprietary platform so that the customer and his/her revenue stream only belong to Vendor A.

Is a new ice cream vendor setting up shop on the deck of the Titanic going to be good for ice cream consumers? I have no doubt the captain feels that it will cheer the passengers up and give him a little more leverage. Deckchair pundits also have some gossip to entertain themselves with.

However, it's all moot.

What will you say when we're overrun with copyleft music in high fidelity FLAC format?
No fee payable. No DRM. No infringement necessary.

Don't buy copies, buy music - pay the musician directly.

iTunes? Zune? Trash!

You need Jamendo.
