Actually, I think it's that they just don't care and want to whitewash the fact that God wasn't particularly merciful toward the Jews on many occassions in the Bible. If you don’t believe in the Bible, I know that it doesn’t make any sense. If the creator of all that exists chooses you to act on His behalf, no one has a right to go against you when you are in the service of said creator, and you, as said creator’s agent on Earth, have an obligation to carry out punishment for disobedience toward your “retainer.”
