I see your points and would invite your comments on the following DRM interoperability initiatives:
1.Sun DReaM which claims that its open source nature will be fundamentally more secure and robust than closed proprietary systems. The reason being:"open architectures allow for more diverse discussions of technology choices and for more oppportunities to review and improve code."
2.OMA DRM: the DRM spec's can be obtained but the existance of a Content Management and Licensing Administrator(CMLA) could help with enforcing the implementation approvals.

Well, I agree with your sentiments about DRM, but I don't think I'd go down for making it illegal. I'm happy to put DRMed and non-DRMed products on a level playing field and let consumers choose. My problem is with the government giving DRM schemes special legal protections.

You make some very good points in this article. Interoperable DRM is a contradiction in terms, and we are going to have to start pushing for legislatures to make DRM of any form illegal.
The only thing that DRM does is make legitimate users jump through hoops in order to use their legitimate downloads.
It's bull, and people are beginning to realize in the enthusiast section of the tech community, that is what it is.
