It's true that some Internet connections can be traced, but others can't. There are libraries, Internet cafes, and university computing labs, all of which will generally allow anonymous access to the Internet. I believe some of the "one month free" AOL CDs can be used anonymously.

If you want to find an untracable Internet connection to send a death threat to the president, it's not hard to do. Shutting down all unsecured access points in the world--even if that were feasible--would only marginally increase the difficulty determined people would have finding an anonymous Internet connection.

I totally agree, and I use unsecured APs in the same manner, but this:

Trading kiddie porn and stealing credit card numbers are a big deal, but one can do that with any Internet connection. There's nothing special about WiFi in that respect.

isn't quite right. Anonymity is the special thing about wifi in that respect -- if you do those things from your home connection, they can be traced back to you. Not so if you're driving down the street using a random AP.

"To hack," in modern parlance, means "to do something with a computer which I don't like."
